Empowerment: receive it or go for it?

Empowerment refers to measures designed to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in people and in communities in order to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority.

If it was considered modelled through maths, we would say it’s a combination of Attitude, Capability and Conditions & Opportunities. Why? Because empowerment is linked to feeling capable of taking action, influencing people and organisations, willingness to face challenges. Knowing yourself, your talents & strengths are clearly enablers. Taking the time to discover them will help understand in what conditions we perform at best. If we add the fact that being mentored by a team of advisors can boost our professional development and hence our power, we have in hand two driving forces towards empowerment.

Nevertheless, they need a third component pillar to have the maximum impact on Empowerment: it’s where the environment enters the stage. A place where we can count on the support of our project team and our management is a critical success factor. Imagine organisations where initiative taking isn’t part of enterprise-culture, challenging colleagues isn’t well perceived?

As a conclusion, we can see that Empowerment is mainly something coming from us and that we can build with time, thanks to our self-drive and competences development.
