Lessons learned from a career of mistakes

Lessons learned is by far the best practice in project management, if it is done correctly. Everyone is willing to talk about all the stuff you did wrong on your project; occasionally you’ll get the good stuff too. The hard part is doing something with that information.

It’s along these lines that Michael will share 3 major lessons he has learned throughout his career in the hope that others can prevent the same mistakes and do things better.


Michael Pace is an Executive Professor at Texas A&M University – Mays Business School, USA where he teaches Introduction to Business, Project Management, and the Strategic Management capstone. He is also a faculty affiliate of Texas A&M’s Energy Institute, where he teaches a graduate course in project management, and sits on the Board of Directors for International Project Management Association, USA (IPMA-USA). His research focuses on project management effectiveness, particularly concerning methodologies – usage, hybridization, decision-making, selection.

Dr. Pace’s academic pursuits come after 15+ years experience in various industries building project management offices and PM functions, managing strategic projects, and fixing broken processes. He has managed projects large and small (multi-million dollar & hundreds of stakeholders down to zero budget & a team of 4), and his portfolio includes everything from software deployments and product launches to market research to a Floyd Mayweather, Jr. boxing event.
